An Endemic Beauty from Brazil

Ephebopus uatuman is a fascinating species of fossorial tarantula found exclusively in the Amazonian region of northern Brazil. Its striking appearance features a dark amber-brown carapace and legs, accompanied by a mesmerizing abdomen that displays reddish hairs and fine yellow bands. Female specimens are particularly captivating with a greenish metallic shimmer on their abdomen, offering a truly exotic visual.

Adaptations for Survival

This tarantula thrives in humid forest environments, preferring soil or leaf-litter-lined burrows that highlight its terrestrial and fossorial nature. Its most unique feature lies in its defensive mechanism. Unlike many other members of the Theraphosidae family, Ephebopus uatuman employs urticating setae located on the palpal femora—releasing them by rubbing the palps against the chelicerae to create defensive irritant clouds. This offers remarkable protection from predators and pests alike.

Care Requirements for Enthusiasts

Keeping Ephebopus uatuman requires replicating its natural tropical habitat. It’s essential to maintain stable high humidity levels with good ventilation. A substrate layer approximately 10-12 cm deep is recommended to support their digging behavior while helping retain moisture. As heavy webbers and avid burrowers, they often build large silk-lined tunnels and webbing structures, making them a captivating choice for arachnid enthusiasts.
